Gunmen killed 12 people after attacking an informal settlement near Johannesburg overnight. South African police confirmed the deadly shooting on Wednesday. The incident marked another mass shooting in the violence-hit country. As a result, authorities launched an investigation into the attack.
According to police, the shooting occurred shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday. More than 10 armed suspects arrived in a vehicle. They entered the settlement through different entrances before opening fire. The attackers targeted residents and community members at several locations. Afterwards, they fled the area in the same vehicle.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi outlined the details of the attack. She said investigators continued gathering evidence from the scene. Furthermore, authorities worked to identify the suspects involved. No arrests have been made so far.
Victims Include Men and Women
Preliminary investigations revealed that 12 people died in the shooting. Eight adult men were declared dead at the scene. Additionally, three adult women lost their lives during the attack. Another victim later died in hospital from injuries.
The shooting occurred in Cleveland, east of Johannesburgโs city centre. The area lies roughly six kilometres from downtown Johannesburg. Consequently, emergency responders reached the scene shortly after reports emerged.
Nevhuhulwi said police have not yet determined a motive. However, investigators continue exploring all possible leads. Authorities urged witnesses to share information that could assist the case.
Violent Crime Remains Major Concern
South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime. More than 60 homicides occur daily on average nationwide. Moreover, both legal and illegal firearms remain widely available. Gang rivalries and disputes among informal businesses often contribute to deadly shootings.
Therefore, the latest attack has renewed concerns about public safety. Communities and officials continue seeking solutions to rising violence across the country.
