KARACHI: The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission has predicted that Eid ul Adha 2026 in Pakistan will likely fall on Wednesday, May 27, based on preliminary astronomical calculations.
According to SUPARCOโs assessment, there is a strong possibility that authorities will sight the crescent moon of Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH on Sunday, May 17. The space agency stated that the new moon will be born at 1:01am on the same day.
By sunset on May 17, the moonโs age will reach approximately 18 hours and 30 minutes. Astronomers generally consider this duration suitable for visibility with the naked eye under favorable weather conditions.
Furthermore, SUPARCO explained that coastal regions of Pakistan may experience improved chances of moon sighting because the difference between sunset and moonset will remain close to 60 minutes. Experts believe this time gap increases the possibility of observing the crescent more clearly.
However, the agency also noted that clear crescent visibility often becomes stronger when the moonโs age approaches 20 hours. Despite this factor, current calculations still indicate a high probability of moon sighting on May 17.
Based on these projections, Pakistan is expected to complete 29 days of Dhul Qadah before entering the month of Dhul Hijjah. Consequently, Eid ul Adha would most likely be observed nationwide on May 27.
Meanwhile, officials emphasized that the final announcement regarding the moon sighting and Eid date will come from the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after its official meeting chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.
Religious authorities traditionally verify astronomical predictions through eyewitness testimonies before confirming Islamic calendar dates in Pakistan.
