The Airline Operators Committee (AOC) has urged authorities to postpone the implementation of the digital vaccination card requirement for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. The committee requested that the new system take effect from October 1 instead of mid-September.
The government recently made digital vaccination cards mandatory for all international travellers, including pilgrims. However, the AOC has written to the Health Officer at Karachi Airport seeking additional time for implementation.
In its letter, the committee requested an extension for the discontinuation of manual vaccination cards. It argued that airlines and passengers have limited time to prepare for the new requirement.
Airlines Raise Concerns Over Implementation
According to the AOC, the digital vaccination card system is scheduled to take effect on September 16. The committee warned that the short transition period could create operational challenges for both airlines and travellers.
The AOC also highlighted concerns regarding passenger processing at airports. It noted that many international travellers arrive shortly before departure, which could lead to congestion if vaccination verification takes place at the airport.
Committee members warned that on-site checks and vaccinations could result in long queues and flight delays. They stressed the need for smoother arrangements before the policy becomes fully operational.
Call for More Vaccination Centres
The committee further proposed establishing vaccination and registration centres at multiple locations across Karachi. It said wider access would help passengers complete requirements before arriving at the airport.
The AOC specifically suggested setting up centres at or near NADRA offices. According to the committee, such facilities would make the process more convenient and reduce pressure on airport operations.
Airline operators believe a short extension would allow authorities and passengers to adapt to the new system more effectively. They have therefore requested that manual vaccination cards remain valid until October 1.
