The Sindh government has approved a Rs2 billion endowment fund to support the treatment and welfare of children affected by HIV. The decision comes as authorities continue investigating the outbreak linked to Valika Hospital and intensify action against those found responsible.
The fund was approved during a meeting of the governing body of the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI). The session was chaired by Labour Minister and SESSI Chairman Saeed Ghani. Senior officials, including Labour Secretary Sajid Jamal Abro, SESSI Commissioner Hadi Bux Kalhoro, and other governing body members, also attended the meeting.
Rs2 Billion Fund Approved for HIV-Affected Children
The newly approved endowment fund will help provide quality medical treatment and long-term support for children living with HIV. In addition, the initiative aims to assist their families as authorities respond to the growing health concern.
Officials said the fund reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring affected children receive proper healthcare and welfare services.
The decision follows concerns over HIV cases reported at Valika Hospital, where investigations remain ongoing.
Inquiry Recommendations Approved
During the meeting, the governing body reviewed the findings of an inquiry committee formed under the directions of the provincial ombudsman.
After detailed discussions, members approved the committee’s recommendations. As a result, authorities suspended 37 doctors and paramedical staff. They also issued show-cause notices as part of the disciplinary process.
Meanwhile, officials stressed that further action would depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
Government Vows Strict Accountability
Addressing the meeting, Saeed Ghani reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a transparent investigation. He said every individual found responsible would face action.
“No one involved will be given any leniency,” he said.
He explained that authorities established the inquiry committee on October 29, 2025, one day after the matter came to his attention.
Initially, only a small number of HIV cases had been reported. However, officials later expanded screening to include all affected children. As a result, authorities have confirmed 78 HIV cases so far.
Investigations Continue Into Source of Infections
According to Ghani, investigators are examining whether the infections occurred during the same period or developed earlier.
At the same time, officials are reviewing the responsibilities of doctors, paramedical staff, and other personnel who were on duty during the relevant period.
He described the incident as a serious tragedy and assured families that the provincial government would continue supporting the affected children.
Budget Meeting Adjourned Until July 17
Besides discussing the HIV outbreak, the governing body also reviewed the SESSI budget for 2026-27 and the revised budget for 2025-26.
Members raised several suggestions and reservations during the session. Therefore, the meeting was adjourned until July 17 to allow further deliberations before final decisions are made.
Government Continues Response to HIV Outbreak
The establishment of the Rs2 billion Sindh HIV fund marks a significant step in supporting children affected by the outbreak. At the same time, investigations remain underway to determine responsibility for the infections.
Meanwhile, disciplinary proceedings against suspended medical staff continue, while authorities maintain that accountability and proper medical care will remain top priorities.
