The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned Yemen’s Houthi group attacks against Mecca and the Medina region.
In a statement issued by its General Secretariat, the pan-Islamic organisation also denounced continuing attacks against Saudi Arabia.
The OIC said attacks near holy sites could create fear among civilians and violate the sanctity of mosques and religious locations.
It also warned that such actions could provoke Muslims worldwide and violate international norms and laws.
OIC Expresses Solidarity With Saudi Arabia
The organisation said attacks against holy sites, places of worship and civilian infrastructure were unacceptable.
The OIC stressed that violations of holy sites require measures to prevent further incidents and protect these locations.
Furthermore, the organisation expressed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and supported measures taken by Riyadh to protect its sovereignty and national security.
The statement followed a Saudi-led coalition report that its air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone near Mecca on Tuesday.
Saudi Arabia Reports Drone Interception
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said Saudi forces intercepted the drone at around 6:50pm local time.
He said the drone was destroyed before entering restricted airspace around Mecca, while its wreckage fell south of the holy city.
Al-Malki described the incident as the Houthis’ second reported attempt to target Mecca.
He cited a ballistic missile launched toward the city on July 27, 2017, as an earlier incident.
The Houthis have rejected the Saudi account and denied launching a drone toward Mecca.
Meanwhile, the latest development comes amid renewed fighting involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi-led coalition recently reported Houthi missile and drone attacks that injured civilians in several Saudi cities.
The OIC’s statement adds to regional reactions concerning the security of Saudi Arabia and the protection of Islamic holy sites.
