Saudi Arabia destroyed a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi group near Mecca. The Saudi-led coalition announced this shocking development today.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said the air defences intercepted the drone around 6:50pm local time on Tuesday.
He said the drone was destroyed before entering restricted airspace around the holy city, while debris fell south of Mecca.
The Houthis rejected the Saudi claim and said they had not launched any drone toward Mecca.
Drone Incident Raises Security Concerns
Al-Malki described the incident as the Houthis’ second alleged attempt to target Mecca.
He referred to a ballistic missile launched toward the city in July 2017 as the first reported attempt.
The spokesman said protecting the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims remained a key security priority for Saudi Arabia.
He also warned that the coalition would take measures to deter further attacks.
The latest incident occurred amid growing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, who have fought Yemen’s internationally recognised government for years.
Saudi Arabia Reports Earlier Houthi Attacks
A day earlier, the Saudi-led coalition said Houthi missile and drone attacks injured 13 civilians in Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif.
The coalition also reported damage to seven homes and two vehicles during the attacks.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for a large-scale operation targeting Saudi military facilities with ballistic missiles and drones.
Meanwhile, Saudi authorities have pledged measures to defend the kingdom against further attacks.
The latest developments come as fighting between Yemen’s government forces and the Houthis has intensified since early July.
The conflict began in 2014 when the Houthis seized Sanaa and several provinces.
In 2015, a Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in Yemen to support the internationally recognised government.
The renewed fighting has raised fresh concerns about regional security and the safety of key areas.
