The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has expanded its investigation into alleged irregularities at Gomal University. Officials launched the inquiry after an official review flagged hundreds of questionable degrees. Authorities said the review uncovered alleged academic and financial irregularities between 2019 and 2023.
According to the Higher Education Department, university administrators first identified the suspected violations. Subsequently, officials began examining academic records and administrative procedures. The investigation revealed 514 degrees that authorities considered suspicious. Therefore, officials recommended the cancellation of those degrees pending further review.
Officials Suspend Former University Administrators
Preliminary findings prompted authorities to suspend a former director of affiliations. Additionally, proceedings have begun against a former controller of examinations. Officials believe these actions will support a transparent investigation process.
Meanwhile, the government has established a new inquiry committee. The committee will conduct a comprehensive review of university records and procedures. Furthermore, investigators will examine allegations of financial mismanagement. Authorities aim to determine whether administrative failures caused financial losses to the institution.
Government Promises Accountability and Reforms
Provincial Higher Education Minister Mina Khan Afridi pledged to pursue the case to its conclusion. He stated that authorities would hold accountable anyone involved in issuing irregular degrees. Moreover, officials will take action against individuals responsible for financial misconduct.
Afridi emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening oversight in public universities. He said enhanced accountability measures would help protect academic standards. In addition, the reforms aim to safeguard studentsโ interests and academic futures.
The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to eliminate corruption and malpractice. Consequently, the government hopes to restore public confidence in university qualifications. Officials believe stronger governance will improve the credibility of higher education institutions throughout the province.
