Pakistan has expressed optimism over ongoing technical talks between Iran and the United States. Officials said future trade and economic cooperation with Tehran depends on the easing of international sanctions. Meanwhile, Islamabad welcomed continued diplomatic engagement between both countries.
Pakistan Welcomes Ongoing US-Iran Negotiations
Speaking at the weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi described the negotiations as a positive development. He said the process toward sanctions relief had already begun through talks in Buergenstock, Switzerland.
Andrabi noted that technical-level discussions experienced a temporary pause. However, he confirmed the talks would resume next Tuesday with a Pakistani delegation present.
He said continued dialogue between Washington and Tehran remained an encouraging sign. Therefore, Pakistan hopes the negotiations will produce constructive and lasting outcomes.
Addressing the Strait of Hormuz situation, Andrabi said regional tensions could ease through diplomacy. However, he added that normal operations in the strategic waterway may require more time.
Trade Prospects Depend on Sanctions Relief
Responding to questions about regional security, Andrabi reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Gulf Cooperation Council initiatives. He also stressed respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all regional states.
The spokesperson highlighted recent discussions during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan. Both sides reviewed opportunities to expand bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation.
However, Andrabi said progress on major economic projects depends on the lifting of US sanctions against Iran. He added that trade expansion and sanctions relief would move forward simultaneously.
Responding to another question, Andrabi said a proposed $300 billion financing package for Iran may be discussed during the ongoing technical negotiations in Switzerland.
