The federal government is reviewing emergency measures to reduce petroleum consumption as global energy concerns intensify due to the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Officials are examining several options to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies and manage potential pressure on the country’s energy resources.
According to sources, authorities are considering a “smart petroleum lockdown” aimed at conserving fuel nationwide. The proposal comes as petroleum prices face upward pressure amid uncertainty in international markets.
Smart Petroleum Lockdown Under Consideration
Under the proposed plan, citizens could follow a four-day workweek while observing three restricted movement days. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday may be designated for limited travel to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.
Sources said the initiative is designed to lower petroleum demand and support national fuel conservation efforts. At the same time, regular business and government operations would continue during the remaining four working days.
Officials are also evaluating additional measures to discourage non-essential travel on weekends. Consequently, the government hopes to reduce overall demand for petroleum products and strengthen energy management.
Prime Minister to Review Final Recommendations
Authorities are consulting relevant stakeholders and departments before making a final decision. The government is assessing how the proposed restrictions could affect businesses, public activities, and administrative operations.
Moreover, officials are preparing a comprehensive report outlining the potential benefits and challenges of the smart petroleum lockdown. The report will be submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for review.
Sources indicated that the prime minister is expected to make an important announcement after examining the recommendations. Therefore, no final decision has been made regarding the duration or implementation of the proposed measures.
The government’s primary focus remains on reducing fuel consumption, limiting unnecessary travel, and controlling energy usage. Any nationwide strategy will be finalized only after consultations conclude and the prime minister grants approval.
