The election for the new president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will take place on September 24. AJK Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal announced the schedule during a news conference in Muzaffarabad on Tuesday.
Justice Mughal shared details of the election process alongside Senior Member Khawaja Muhammad Ahsan and Member Syed Nazir-ul-Hassan Gilani. He said the election would be conducted at the Assembly Secretariat under the established constitutional procedure.
Nomination Process and Scrutiny Schedule
According to the announced timetable, candidates will submit their nomination papers on September 19. The Returning Officer and Chief Election Commissioner will receive papers between 10 am and 12 noon.
Furthermore, election officials will scrutinize nomination papers on the same day. Candidates will also have the option to withdraw their nominations until 11:30 am on September 23.
The Chief Election Commissioner stated that authorities would issue the final list of presidential candidates on September 23. Consequently, the election process will move into its final stage ahead of polling day.
Polling and Result Announcement Details
Polling for the presidential election will take place on September 24 from 10 am to 1 pm. Election officials will begin counting votes immediately after polling concludes.
Moreover, authorities will announce the election results on the same day. Officials expect the process to proceed smoothly under the supervision of the Election Commission.
Justice Mughal emphasized that the election of the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted on the basis of a majority vote. Therefore, the candidate securing the required majority will become the next constitutional head of the territory.
The announcement formally initiates the presidential election process and sets the stage for the selection of AJK’s new president later this month.
