The Punjab government has introduced body-worn cameras for police officials to strengthen accountability and improve public safety. The initiative aims to modernise policing and improve monitoring of personnel during field operations.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed the project, which has initially launched in Lahore. Trained police personnel are now prepared to use the devices, while authorities have started installing docking stations at police stations.
Body Cameras Linked With Safe City Systems
Punjab Police, Punjab Highway Patrol, Dolphin Force, and traffic wardens will use the cameras while performing their duties. The devices will connect with Smart Safe City systems operating across 43 cities, enabling live monitoring through district control rooms.
Moreover, the cameras include facial-recognition technology to help identify suspects and automatically read vehicle number plates. They can also generate immediate threat alerts during emergencies, strengthening police response capabilities.
The devices provide audio and video recording, photography, and calling facilities for officers. Built-in memory allows personnel to store recordings while they remain on duty.
Secure Data Transfer After Police Shifts
Officers must return their cameras to designated docking stations after completing their shifts. The system will then automatically transfer recorded data and securely store the information.
Furthermore, the cameras feature push-to-talk functions that allow officers to communicate directly with control rooms. An SOS button also enables personnel to send emergency alerts when immediate assistance becomes necessary.
Maryam Nawaz said the system would strengthen police monitoring and help curb corruption. She added that ensuring public security, particularly for vulnerable groups, would determine the project’s success.
The chief minister emphasized that protecting every individual’s life and property remains the Punjab government’s foremost responsibility. Consequently, officials expect the technology to improve police accountability and public confidence across the province.
