Donald Trump has stated that a potential nuclear agreement with Iran will surpass the 2015 deal. He emphasized that his administration aims to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In a recent statement, Trump expressed confidence in ongoing negotiations. He suggested that the new deal would deliver stronger safeguards and broader regional stability.
Criticism of the 2015 Nuclear Agreement
Trump strongly criticized the earlier agreement reached under Barack Obama. The deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, aimed to limit Iranโs nuclear programme.
However, Trump described it as deeply flawed. He said, โThe DEAL that we are making with Iran will be FAR BETTER than the JCPOA, commonly referred to as โThe Iran Nuclear Deal,โโ.
He further argued that the agreement enabled Iran to move closer to nuclear capability. โIt was a guaranteed Road to a Nuclear Weapon, which will not, and cannot, happen with the Deal weโre working on,โ Trump said.
Concerns Over Financial Aspects of the Deal
Trump also raised concerns about financial elements linked to the earlier agreement. He claimed that large sums of money were transferred to Iran under the deal.
โIn addition, Hundreds of Billions of Dollars was paid to Iran,โ he said. He added that these funds were used without strict limitations.
These remarks reflect long-standing criticism of the JCPOAโs economic provisions. Critics have often debated the impact of sanctions relief on regional dynamics.
Withdrawal from the JCPOA and Its Impact
During his first term, Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement in 2018. He argued that this decision prevented wider security risks in the region.
โIf I did not terminate that โDeal,โ Nuclear Weapons would have been used on Israel, and all over the Middle East, including our cherished U.S. Military Bases,โ he said.
The original agreement included limits on uranium enrichment and centrifuge use. It also introduced international inspections to monitor compliance.
Promise of a Stronger and More Stable Agreement
Trump maintained that any future deal under his leadership would be more effective. He stressed that it would ensure peace and stability across the Middle East and beyond.
He also addressed criticism regarding the pace of negotiations. โI will not be rushed,โ Trump said, reinforcing his approach to complex diplomatic discussions.
To support his argument, he referenced historical conflicts that lasted for years. He implied that careful negotiation is essential for long-term stability.
