Police have registered a case against a Karachi doctor and hospital staff after a one-month-old baby lost his hand.
The case concerns alleged medical negligence involving Azmatullah, whose hand was eventually amputated. Pirabad police registered the case against Dr Yasir Inam and three unidentified hospital staff members.
According to the baby’s father, his son fell ill on August 31. He then took him to a hospital in Orangi Town No. 4 for treatment.
The father alleged that Dr Yasir Inam ordered a cannula to be inserted into the baby’s hand. Three hospital staff members reportedly bandaged the hand after inserting the cannula.
Baby’s Hand Turns Black After Cannula
The father said staff administered injections through the cannula six or seven times. Four days later, he returned to the hospital and doctors removed the bandage.
He claimed the baby’s hand had turned completely black by then. The doctor reportedly prescribed medicines and assured the family that the infection would improve.
However, the baby’s condition continued to worsen, according to the father. He subsequently took his son to Jinnah Hospital for further treatment.
Doctors there allegedly told him that incorrect cannula placement caused the infection. They reportedly said the baby’s hand needed amputation to prevent further complications.
Police Seek Healthcare Commission Investigation
The father alleged that negligence by the doctor and three unidentified staff members caused the amputation. Meanwhile, Pirabad police said they had contacted the Healthcare Commission for assistance with the investigation.
The hospital administration provided a different account of the incident. It said the family visited the hospital in August and left after having the cannula inserted without informing staff.
The administration said it had recently learned about the baby’s amputation and launched an investigation. It also stated that the hospital would face legal action if authorities found grounds for it.
