Lands Beyond the Veil opens at VM Art Gallery in Karachi. It transforms personal grief into a serene visual journey. The show runs until April 28. It draws visitors into mystical landscapes that feel suspended between worlds. Moreover, the artist draws from her own loss of two loved ones. She turns sorrow into something gentle and luminous rather than dark.
Artist Turns Grief Into Comforting Colours and Mystical Scenes
Shanzay Subzwari fills her canvases with soft pinks, luminous blues and pastel hues. She calls them her “comfort colours.” These bright tones create a quiet sense of solace instead of mourning. Furthermore, she blends the flattened perspective and jewel-like detail of Mughal miniatures with modern symbols. These include floating hot air balloons that represent souls in transition. In one painting, a rhythmic procession of anonymous figures walks along a body of water. A lotus blooms at the centre, hinting at rebirth and transcendence.
Paintings Explore Barzakh and the Space of Waiting
The works echo the Barzakh. It is a threshold where the soul waits between this life and the next. Viewers see richly imagined gardens with adorned elephants, alert tigers and peacocks near reflective pools. These are framed by archways that act as symbolic doors. As a result, the scenes feel intimate yet vast. They invite people to linger in the unknown rather than rush for answers. Subzwari’s evolving style, shaped by international residencies and fellowships, now focuses on memory, identity and the unseen.
The exhibition marks a thoughtful step in the artist’s journey from popular culture portraits to deeper metaphysical questions. Visitors leave with a sense of calm wonder. They also take away a gentle reminder to pause where certainty ends.
