Pakistan’s 33rd Foreign Secretary Amina Baloch will retire from government service on September 17 after more than three decades of diplomatic service. She assumed the position of Foreign Secretary on September 11, 2024, and guided the Foreign Office through an important period.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar praised Baloch for her tireless service, leadership, and commitment to Pakistan. He also said she leaves behind a valuable legacy of dedication and public service.
Following her retirement, Baloch will take charge as Pakistan’s ambassador to Turkey. Dar expressed confidence that she would continue serving the country with determination, competence, and professionalism.
Asim Iftikhar Ahmed Named Successor
Dar announced that Asim Iftikhar Ahmed will become Pakistan’s next Foreign Secretary. He currently serves as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
According to Dar, Iftikhar will lead the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with clarity, professionalism, and purpose. He also expressed confidence that the incoming foreign secretary would continue advancing Pakistan’s national interests.
Prime Minister Approves New Appointments
Dar said Iftikhar would carry forward the important work undertaken by Baloch and previous foreign secretaries. He highlighted the continuity of diplomatic efforts under the new leadership.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the appointments and new responsibilities, according to Dar. The leadership transition will take place as Baloch completes her tenure at the Foreign Office.
Meanwhile, Baloch’s appointment as ambassador to Turkey will allow her to continue representing Pakistan abroad. The government has expressed confidence in her ability to contribute to Pakistan’s diplomatic objectives in her new role.
