Russian geopolitical analyst Dr. Roksolana Zigon warned against weakening the Indus Waters Treaty for political purposes. Speaking in Islamabad on Tuesday, she said preserving the agreement remains essential for regional peace and stability.
Dr. Zigon addressed an international seminar focused on the Indus Waters Treaty. Moreover, she expressed concern over India’s stance on regional water issues and its potential impact on international confidence.
She argued that unilateral actions involving shared water resources could undermine trust between neighbouring countries. Furthermore, she warned that additional upstream dam construction could increase tensions across South Asia.
Analyst Raises Concerns Over Water Disputes
Dr. Zigon said any attempt to deprive Pakistan of water would violate international law. She also noted that more than 90 percent of Pakistan’s agriculture depends on river water for irrigation.
According to her, the Indus Waters Treaty provides a fair framework for distributing shared water resources. Therefore, altering the natural flow of rivers could seriously affect Pakistan’s agricultural sector and water security.
She further claimed that using water as a political tool could deepen regional instability. Consequently, she stressed that continued implementation of the treaty remains vital for lasting peace.
Treaty Still Seen as Successful Water-Sharing Framework
Dr. Zigon described the Indus Waters Treaty as one of the world’s most successful water-sharing agreements. Under the accord, India receives rights over the eastern rivers, while Pakistan has rights to the western rivers.
She also highlighted the role of the Permanent Indus Commission in resolving disputes between both countries. According to Dr. Zigon, the commission continues serving as an effective platform for dialogue and conflict resolution.
The seminar concluded with renewed emphasis on preserving the treaty as a cornerstone of regional water cooperation.
