A newly constructed bridge and road project collapsed after recent rainfall in Dera Ghazi Khan. The Bara Bridge and Vador Road project reportedly cost Rs 130 million. However, the structure failed only months after completion.
According to local sources, the collapse occurred on June 4. A low-level water flow in the Vador hill torrent triggered the damage.
The rainfall occurred a day earlier and increased water movement. Consequently, the bridge and adjoining road could not withstand the pressure.
The collapse disrupted transportation links across several rural communities. Residents now face serious challenges in reaching the city.
Villages Cut Off After Infrastructure Failure
The damaged route connected several settlements with Dera Ghazi Khan. These areas include Bela, Vador Zai, Dilana, Rakh Bela, Wahi Kangrani, and Kocha Wadani.
As a result, residents have lost their primary connection to urban services. Many now struggle to access healthcare, education, and markets.
The road suffered partial washouts in several sections. Therefore, alternative routes remain either unsafe or inaccessible.
Local residents have urged authorities to restore connectivity immediately. They also requested temporary travel arrangements until repairs are completed.
Residents Demand Inquiry Into Construction Quality
Community members claimed they had raised concerns months earlier. They alleged that contractors used substandard materials during construction.
According to residents, local representatives warned officials about possible structural weaknesses. Nevertheless, authorities reportedly failed to address those concerns.
Following the collapse, public criticism has intensified across the affected areas. Residents are demanding accountability from all responsible parties.
Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, citizens are seeking strict action against contractors and officials if negligence is proven.
The investigation will determine whether poor construction standards contributed to the project’s failure. Officials are expected to submit findings after completing the review.
