The Punjab government has approved a major expansion of its public-private partnership program in higher education. Under the first phase, authorities will hand over 150 government colleges to private operators. The transition will begin during the upcoming summer vacations. Officials say the initiative aims to improve educational quality and modernize public institutions.
Government Expands Public-Private Partnership Model
The new policy extends the existing partnership model beyond government schools. Consequently, public colleges will now become part of the privatization program. Officials also announced plans to gradually phase out commerce colleges across Punjab.
Meanwhile, the Higher Education Department has approved the establishment of “Colleges of Eminence” in every tehsil. Under this initiative, one model college in each tehsil will receive upgrades based on international standards. Authorities expect the project to strengthen higher education throughout the province.
New Performance Standards Introduced
The department has developed benchmarks to identify colleges for improvement and recognition. Officials will evaluate institutions using 10 mandatory performance and quality criteria. These include academic reputation, qualified faculty, student performance, research, innovation, and modern infrastructure.
The assessment will also consider laboratory facilities, libraries, industry partnerships, and internship opportunities. Furthermore, officials believe these standards will encourage continuous institutional improvement. They say the reforms will align government colleges with modern educational requirements. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to raise academic standards and enhance learning opportunities across Punjab.
