Punjab has extended the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme from four years to five years. The revised structure will take effect across all dental colleges from the 2025-26 academic session.
New Curriculum Aligns Dental Education With Global Standards
The University of Health Sciences has issued an official notification confirming the programme extension. The university introduced the revised curriculum under standards set by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.
Officials said the updated curriculum aims to improve the quality of dental education nationwide. Moreover, the programme places greater emphasis on clinical training, research and simulation-based learning.
The revised structure will help students develop stronger practical skills throughout their academic journey. Additionally, the curriculum seeks to improve the international recognition of Pakistani dental qualifications.
UHS also proposed a bridging programme for graduates holding the previous four-year BDS degree. The top-up year will allow eligible graduates to obtain qualifications equivalent to the new five-year programme.
Reform Expected To Boost Global Career Opportunities
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Ahsan Waheed Rathore described the initiative as a significant educational reform. He said the change extends beyond adding another academic year to the programme.
According to Rathore, the revised curriculum will strengthen graduates’ competitiveness in international healthcare markets. Furthermore, the programme will better prepare students for global licensing examinations and postgraduate studies abroad.
He added that aligning dental education with international standards has become increasingly important. Therefore, the reform aims to create more employment and higher education opportunities for Pakistani dentists worldwide.
The five-year BDS programme also reflects evolving healthcare requirements and modern educational practices. Officials expect the updated curriculum to produce graduates with stronger clinical expertise and research capabilities.
