A pilot died after a small aircraft crashed into Beijing’s tallest skyscraper on Friday. Chinese authorities confirmed the incident on Saturday. Additionally, the crash injured 13 people on the ground. Officials have not yet disclosed the cause.
The single-engine, two-seat aircraft struck the 528-metre CITIC Tower at 5:55 pm. The pilot was the aircraft’s only occupant. Authorities said emergency responders quickly reached the scene after the crash.
Emergency Response Underway
Witnesses reported scattered aircraft debris near the base of the skyscraper. Journalists also observed damaged windows on one of the building’s upper floors. Furthermore, videos showed firefighters extinguishing small flames beside the building.
Police and ambulances surrounded the area shortly after the incident. Officers also prevented bystanders from taking photographs. Meanwhile, a student said aviation enthusiasts quickly shared news of the crash through social media.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into the deadly incident. However, officials have not announced what caused the aircraft to crash. Online images and eyewitness posts reportedly disappeared from social media shortly afterward.
The CITIC Tower contains 108 floors above ground and seven basement levels. It can accommodate approximately 12,000 office workers. Fortunately, authorities reported no additional fatalities inside the building.
China maintains strict restrictions over its airspace, especially around Beijing. Earlier this year, officials also introduced tighter drone regulations in the capital. Therefore, the rare crash has drawn significant public attention as investigators continue examining the circumstances.
