US President Donald Trump said Yemen’s Houthi fighters asked Washington not to intervene in their conflict. Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters during his visit to Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday.
The Houthis control Yemen’s Red Sea coastline after capturing three strategic islands. Their growing influence has increased concerns over a vital shipping route linking Europe and Asia.
Trump said the Houthis contacted the United States and expressed no interest in fighting American forces. He added that they also asked Washington not to target them.
Trump Says Regional Situation Will Improve
Trump expressed confidence that the situation would eventually improve across the region. He also said he had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Trump described the Saudi crown prince as a friend during his remarks. His comments came after recent Houthi attacks raised concerns about regional security.
More than 70 people suffered injuries on Tuesday after Houthi attacks targeted several Saudi cities. The attacks further increased tensions in an already unstable Middle East.
Saudi Arabia relies heavily on the region for energy shipments. The country has faced additional pressure since Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted Gulf exports.
Saudi Arabia Seeks US Support Against Houthis
According to US outlet Axios, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman contacted Trump twice on Thursday. The report said he requested US strikes against the Houthis.
However, Trump reportedly declined the Saudi request for military action. His latest comments suggest Washington currently prefers avoiding direct confrontation with the group.
The development comes as regional tensions continue to threaten shipping and energy supplies. Meanwhile, Trump maintained that the situation could eventually settle without further US military involvement.
