Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has criticized the federal government over repeated increases in petrol prices. He said the rising fuel costs are placing an unbearable burden on citizens across the country.
Speaking during a provincial cabinet meeting on Saturday, Afridi said the continuous increase in petrol prices reflects the absence of a clear economic policy. He questioned how the country could be managed through borrowing while fuel prices continue to climb.
Rising Debt Burden Raises Concerns
The chief minister claimed that Pakistan accumulated nearly Rs43 trillion in debt over 74 years. However, he alleged that the current government increased the debt to almost Rs97 trillion within five years.
According to Afridi, the burden of these loans will eventually fall on ordinary citizens. He warned that growing debt and inflation are creating serious economic challenges for households.
Afridi said poor, middle-class, and white-collar families are struggling to cope with rising living costs. He added that many households now find it difficult to afford even two meals a day.
CM Warns Against Harmful Political Statements
During the meeting, the chief minister also criticized recent remarks made by the Punjab chief minister. He argued that such statements could harm national interests and create negative perceptions internationally.
Afridi said political leaders should avoid comments that could strengthen anti-Pakistan narratives abroad. He stressed the importance of responsible public discourse during challenging economic conditions.
The chief minister reiterated that the public is facing increasing financial pressure due to rising fuel prices. He urged policymakers to adopt measures that provide relief and address the growing concerns of citizens.
