Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged BRICS member states to oppose violations of national sovereignty and reject protectionism during a summit in India.
Xi made the remarks on Saturday as leaders from the 11-member group gathered in New Delhi. Chinese state media reported that the president also called for greater cooperation to address international conflicts.
Xi Calls For Respect Of National Sovereignty
Xi urged BRICS countries to oppose interference in other nations’ internal affairs and support efforts to resolve regional disputes. He also called on member states to uphold the authority of the United Nations.
The Chinese president specifically highlighted the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Gulf region. He said the war has caused serious losses for people across the region as tensions continue to evolve.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also attended the summit. Iran has remained involved in a major conflict following US-Israeli strikes that began on February 28.
China Rejects Protectionism In Global Trade
Meanwhile, Xi urged BRICS members to reject all forms of protectionism and support the multilateral trading system. He said countries should maintain the World Trade Organization as the central institution for global trade.
Xi’s comments come as China and the United States continue to navigate major trade differences. The Chinese president is expected to visit Washington in less than two weeks, highlighting the importance of his latest remarks.
