Students at Quaid-i-Azam University have developed Pakistanโs first mycelium-based packaging material. Environmental Science students Amal Shahid and Noor-ul-Ain created the biodegradable alternative using mushroom mycelium and agricultural waste.
Eco-Friendly Alternative to Plastic Packaging
The packaging material is made from mushroom roots grown on wheat straw and other local waste materials. The process transforms discarded agricultural byproducts into lightweight and moldable packaging. Unlike plastic and polystyrene, the material naturally decomposes without leaving harmful residue.
Pakistan produces nearly two million tons of plastic waste every year. Much of it comes from single-use packaging products. The student researchers believe their innovation can help reduce environmental pollution while supporting a greener packaging industry.
Potential for Large-Scale Industrial Use
The project also highlights the commercial potential of sustainable packaging in Pakistan. With large amounts of agricultural waste available locally, mycelium-based products could become a cost-effective and environmentally responsible solution for manufacturers.
