Apple has unveiled its first foldable iPhone, called Duo, marking the biggest redesign of its flagship smartphone in years. The new device features a passport-like shape with rounded edges and opens into a wide display.
The Duo offers a smaller external screen when folded. Once opened, users can view the larger display horizontally or vertically, while Apple says the device becomes its thinnest iPhone in the open position.
Duo Marks Major iPhone Design Change
The launch represents Apple’s most significant iPhone redesign since the company removed the physical Home button with the iPhone X in 2017. The announcement also marked the first major iPhone event led by new Chief Executive Officer John Ternus.
The iPhone remains Apple’s largest product category, generating $209.6 billion in the company’s most recent fiscal year. That figure represented slightly more than half of Apple’s total sales.
Former CEO Tim Cook introduced Ternus during the presentation through a video. Cook ended the segment by directing attention toward his successor and handing over the spotlight.
Apple Highlights Privacy and Artificial Intelligence
Ternus described the iPhone as a personal artificial intelligence hub focused on privacy. He emphasized that Apple Intelligence processes information on the device whenever possible rather than relying entirely on external servers.
Meanwhile, Apple AI executive Lilian Rincon presented an upgraded Siri assistant. The company said the updated assistant will work with 300,000 apps when it launches.
The Duo therefore combines Apple’s new foldable design with its growing artificial intelligence strategy. The launch could also reshape the company’s flagship smartphone lineup as foldable devices gain wider attention.
