Pakistan and Iran agreed on Tuesday to accelerate agricultural trade and strengthen cooperation across key sectors. The agreement emerged during a high-level meeting in Islamabad between Food Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain and Iranโs Agriculture Jihad Minister Gholamreza Nouri Ghezeljeh.
The Ministry of National Food Security and Research said both sides reviewed progress on bilateral agricultural cooperation. Moreover, they explored new opportunities to expand trade and improve economic collaboration.
Focus on Trade and Food Security
The meeting focused on agriculture, livestock, food security, agricultural research, and trade facilitation. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic ties through practical measures.
They agreed to implement previous commitments for the benefit of farmers, traders, and consumers. Furthermore, officials will work to remove procedural hurdles affecting bilateral trade.
Rana Tanveer Hussain recalled his official visit to Iran in 2025. During that visit, both countries agreed to expand trade in agricultural commodities.
He said Iran had shown interest in importing Pakistani rice, mangoes, and meat. Additionally, he stressed that Pakistan could supply high-quality agricultural products to the Iranian market.
Committee to Boost Bilateral Cooperation
Gholamreza Nouri Ghezeljeh said Iran planned to increase meat imports from Pakistan. He added Pakistan could meet up to 60 percent of Iranโs total meat import requirements.
Both ministers agreed to implement commitments outlined in their joint communiquรฉ within two months. Consequently, they instructed relevant authorities to expedite procedures and eliminate trade bottlenecks.
The meeting also reviewed the Pakistan-Iran Joint Working Committee on Agriculture. Both sides agreed to activate the committee through regular meetings and stronger institutional coordination.
The ministers also pledged to enhance private-sector engagement, technology transfer, regional food security, and sustainable economic growth through closer agricultural cooperation.
