Anthropic has expanded Claude’s integration with Google Workspace, giving the AI assistant greater control over Gmail and Google Drive. The update allows paid users to automate several tasks that previously required more manual involvement.
Claude can now draft, reply to and forward Gmail messages. It can also share, move and delete files stored in Google Drive.
Claude Can Manage Gmail Messages
Paid Claude users can now ask the AI assistant to handle several Gmail tasks. These include drafting emails, replying to messages and forwarding emails.
Claude asks for user approval before performing Gmail actions by default. This setting provides an additional layer of control over automated email activity.
However, users can allow Claude to perform certain actions without requesting permission every time. This option could make email management faster for people who frequently use Claude.
On Team and Enterprise plans, organisation owners control whether members can enable this option.
The change means Claude could potentially send Gmail messages without requiring users to review every email first. Users should therefore check their settings before enabling automatic actions.
Users Can Disable Gmail Actions
People who do not want Claude to manage their Gmail can disable the relevant capabilities through the chat interface.
Organisations have additional controls through their administrative settings. Owners and primary owners can disable these features through Organization settings > Connectors.
These controls give users and organisations more flexibility over how Claude interacts with Google Workspace services.
Claude Gains More Google Drive Controls
Anthropic has also expanded Claude’s capabilities for Google Drive. The AI assistant can now perform several actions involving stored files.
Claude can share, move and trash files in Google Drive. Like Gmail actions, these tasks require user approval by default.
Team and Enterprise administrators can determine whether users can allow Claude to perform these actions without asking for approval each time.
The expanded controls could make it easier to organise files and manage routine Drive tasks through natural language commands.
Google Workspace Integration Still Has Limits
Despite the new capabilities, Claude’s Google Workspace integration still has several restrictions.
Anthropic says Claude’s performance can vary when users have large Gmail inboxes. The assistant also cannot access the contents of email attachments.
Some advanced Gmail filters may not work properly either. Therefore, users may still need to handle certain email searches manually.
Google Drive also has content limitations. Claude can extract text from files stored in Drive, but it cannot process images embedded within those documents.
The assistant also cannot process comments or suggestions included in Google Drive files.
More Automation With User Control
The latest update expands Claude’s role within Google Workspace. Users can now delegate more routine email and file-management tasks to the AI assistant.
At the same time, Anthropic has retained approval controls by default. This allows users to decide how much independence Claude should have.
The new Gmail and Drive capabilities could make Claude more useful for everyday productivity. However, users should understand the available controls and limitations before allowing the assistant to perform actions automatically.
