Bangladesh lawmakers have elected senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the countryโs new president.
The presidency remains a largely ceremonial position in Bangladesh. However, the president serves as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
Mirza Fakhrul secured victory in a parliamentary vote against retired army colonel Oli Ahmed. Ahmed led the Liberal Democratic Party and represented an opposition alliance.
BNP Majority Secures Presidential Victory
The BNP and its allies currently hold a two-thirds majority in parliament. The coalition achieved the majority after winning the general elections in February this year.
Consequently, Mirza Fakhrul entered the presidential race with strong parliamentary support. Lawmakers elected him following a vote in the national assembly.
The 78-year-old politician has long remained one of the BNPโs most influential leaders. He served as the partyโs secretary-general from 2016 until his presidential nomination.
Election Follows Shahabuddinโs Resignation
The presidential election became necessary after former President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned. He stepped down last month due to health reasons before completing his term.
Shahabuddin, a former Awami League politician, assumed the presidency in 2023. His departure created a vacancy that parliament moved to fill.
Mirza Fakhrul played a prominent opposition role during Sheikh Hasinaโs tenure. He frequently criticised government policies and faced several arrests and legal cases.
The BNP returned to power earlier this year following the 2024 fall of Sheikh Hasinaโs government. Mirza Fakhrulโs election marks another significant development in Bangladeshโs changing political landscape.
