The government has announced a Rs100-per-litre petrol relief scheme for motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers and owners of small vehicles.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif introduced the scheme to reduce the impact of rising fuel prices on low-income motorists amid continuing global oil market pressures.
Petrol is currently priced at Rs375.82 per litre, while high-speed diesel costs Rs403.32 per litre.
Who Can Get the Petrol Subsidy?
The relief scheme covers motorcycles, rickshaws, Chingchis and other two- and three-wheeled vehicles.
Eligible users can receive a Rs100-per-litre discount on up to 20 litres of petrol per month.
Owners and users of vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc are also eligible.
For these vehicles, the government will provide the Rs100-per-litre relief on up to 30 litres of petrol per month.
How to Register Through SMS?
The Ministry of IT and Telecommunication has announced an SMS-based registration process.
Eligible citizens need to send an SMS containing “REG” followed by their CNIC number to 9771.
The registration message must also include the vehicle number, provincial code and registration date.
Registration has already opened, allowing eligible motorists to apply for the fuel relief.
How to Get the Fuel Token?
After completing registration, eligible citizens can request their fuel token.
They need to send “TOK” to 9771 to receive the token.
The fuel token can then be presented at participating petrol stations to purchase petrol at the subsidised rate.
When Will the Scheme Start?
The relief scheme will begin in Islamabad from the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
For the rest of Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the scheme will become available from the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The government is also planning an awareness campaign to inform citizens about registration and the subsidy process.
