The Lahore Heritage Areas Revival Board (LHAR) has clarified that the historic Ewing Hall in Anarkali will not be demolished. Instead, authorities will preserve and restore the building under the province’s heritage conservation programme.
The clarification follows public concern over reports suggesting the historic structure could face demolition.
Legal Process Led to Government Takeover
According to LHAR, Ewing Hall was leased in 1915 for student hostel accommodation. However, the building has not served its original educational purpose since 2015. The board said unpaid rent exceeding Rs107 million accumulated despite repeated notices.
Subsequently, the Punjab Board of Revenue issued a show-cause notice in March 2026. After hearing all stakeholders, including Forman Christian College and the Higher Education Department, authorities resumed the land on April 27, 2026.
LHAR said the decision followed a lengthy legal and administrative process rather than a sudden action.
Heritage Conservation Remains Top Priority
The board stressed that Ewing Hall remains an important part of Lahore’s architectural heritage. Therefore, restoration work will follow established heritage conservation principles. Moreover, LHAR and the Walled City of Lahore Authority remain committed to preserving historic buildings across the city.
The board also expressed respect for Forman Christian College and the minority communities connected with the institution. Finally, LHAR said the matter is purely legal and administrative while reaffirming its willingness to engage with all stakeholders.
