KPT Improves Container Port Performance Standing by 30 Positions
KARACHI: Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has achieved a significant improvement in its global ranking, climbing 30 places in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025, reflecting stronger operational efficiency and growing maritime activity at Pakistanโs largest seaport.
According to a KPT spokesperson, the portโs CPPI score increased from 30.0 to 45.7, marking a substantial improvement in performance indicators used to assess container port efficiency worldwide.
Officials attributed the achievement to ongoing efforts aimed at enhancing operational standards, streamlining port activities, and improving service delivery. They said the improved ranking demonstrates KPTโs commitment to boosting productivity and strengthening its position in the international maritime sector.
Furthermore, port authorities expressed confidence that Karachi Port could secure a place among the worldโs top 50 ports by 2027 if current growth trends continue.
Cargo Handling and Ship Arrivals Show Strong Growth
The improved ranking coincided with a notable rise in port activity during fiscal year 2025-26. Karachi Port recorded the movement of 2,000 ships during the year, reaching the milestone for the first time since fiscal year 2017-18.
Officials said the increase highlights renewed momentum in maritime trade and shipping operations.
Meanwhile, cargo handling exceeded 84.4 million tonnes during the fiscal year, reflecting sustained growth in commercial activity at the port.
Focus on Efficiency and Future Expansion
KPT reported that ship arrivals increased by 7.5 percent compared with fiscal year 2024-25, while cargo handling rose by 3 percent on a year-on-year basis.
Authorities said these gains resulted from improved port management, enhanced logistics coordination, and greater operational efficiency across terminal facilities.
As maritime traffic continues to expand, KPT plans to introduce additional measures aimed at improving competitiveness, reducing turnaround times, and attracting more international shipping lines.
Officials believe sustained investment in infrastructure and technology will further strengthen Karachi Portโs role as a key regional trade gateway and support Pakistanโs broader economic and export objectives.
