KARACHI: A video allegedly showing armed men threatening a family on Karachi’s Tipu Sultan Road has gone viral on social media, triggering public concern over the display of weapons and the conduct of private security personnel in the city.
According to reports, the incident occurred when two double-cabin vehicles carrying several armed individuals allegedly collided with a family’s car and then attempted to leave the scene. However, when members of the family tried to record the incident on their mobile phones, the armed men reportedly pointed weapons at a brother and sister and issued threats.
Witnesses further alleged that the suspects used abusive language toward motorists and motorcyclists passing through the area. The footage circulating online has intensified concerns about public safety and the enforcement of regulations governing armed security personnel.
Sources said three armed men were travelling in one of the vehicles, while another armed individual was present in the second vehicle. In addition, one of the vehicles was reportedly displaying an outdated registration number, which officials stated is not legally permitted.
Meanwhile, excise authorities identified the vehicle as a Toyota Hilux registered in the name of Muhammad Mubashir. Officials said the vehicle’s original registration number is SA-9012 and that the registered address of the owner is located in Phase VI of DHA, Karachi.
The video has generated widespread reaction online, with many social media users questioning how armed individuals were allegedly able to intimidate citizens in a public area without immediate intervention.
Under existing regulations in Karachi, the public display of weapons is prohibited. Furthermore, private security guards must wear approved uniforms and caps while on duty. Even then, they are not permitted to openly carry weapons in their hands in public places.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any legal action has been taken against the individuals seen in the footage. Nevertheless, the incident has reignited debate over the implementation of security laws and the presence of armed escorts accompanying private individuals in the city.
