ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrives in Pakistan today following the recent Iran-United States talks held in Switzerland, which were mediated by Islamabad, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA. The visit comes days after negotiators from Tehran and Washington reported encouraging progress toward a comprehensive peace agreement.
According to IRNA, one of President Pezeshkian’s key objectives is to thank Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for Pakistan’s mediation efforts between Iran and the United States. Habibollah Abbasi, director of public relations at the Iranian president’s office, said the visit reflects Tehran’s appreciation for Islamabad’s diplomatic role.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office also confirmed the visit, stating that President Pezeshkian will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers and senior officials. During his stay, he will meet Asif Ali Zardari and hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The Iranian president is also scheduled to meet Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
This marks President Pezeshkian’s second visit to Pakistan since assuming office. According to the Foreign Office, both sides will review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and explore opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, energy, border security, people-to-people exchanges, and regional connectivity.
The discussions will also cover diplomatic engagement following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, along with regional and international developments of mutual interest. The Foreign Office said the visit underscores the shared commitment of Pakistan and Iran to strengthening their historic ties while promoting regional peace, stability, and sustainable development.
The visit follows the first round of Iran-US peace talks in Switzerland, where mediators from Pakistan and Qatar announced encouraging progress toward a final agreement.
A joint statement said both countries had agreed to a roadmap aimed at reaching a comprehensive deal within 60 days, while technical negotiations are set to continue this week at the Swiss mountain resort of Buergenstock.
