ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority directed all Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) to suspend the sale of SIM cards across the country between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM as part of efforts to strengthen monitoring and prevent fraudulent mobile connections.
According to the PTA directive, all authorised SIM sale channels, including franchises and retail outlets, must strictly comply with the prescribed operating hours. The authority stated that the decision aims to improve oversight of SIM issuance procedures and minimise the misuse of unauthorised or illegally obtained mobile connections.
The PTA warned that any violation of the new instructions would lead to strict legal and regulatory action under existing telecom laws. Furthermore, the authority instructed operators and retailers to ensure complete compliance with the policy without any exception.
Meanwhile, the PTA advised citizens to purchase SIM cards only from authorised outlets during the approved timings. It also reminded consumers to complete mandatory biometric verification before activating any new SIM card in accordance with national security and telecom regulations.
In addition, the authority encouraged the public to report any violations through its Complaint Management System (CMS), the PTA mobile application, WhatsApp Digital Assistant or the toll-free helpline. Officials said public cooperation would help authorities curb illegal SIM issuance and strengthen security measures related to mobile communication services.
The latest directive comes amid continued efforts by telecom regulators to tighten controls on mobile registration systems and prevent the use of unverified SIM cards in criminal activities. Authorities believe stricter monitoring and limited sale hours will improve transparency in the SIM issuance process and reduce the risk of fraudulent practices within the telecom sector.
The PTA has directed all mobile operators and retailers to implement the policy immediately across Pakistan.
