The number of children infected in the Karachi Valika Hospital HIV outbreak has increased once again. Two more children have tested positive, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 80.
The latest development has intensified concerns over the outbreak at the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI)-run Kulsoom Bai Valika Hospital. Meanwhile, authorities continue investigations into the incident while affected families await accountability and long-term support.
Two More Children Test Positive
Health officials confirmed that two additional children have tested positive for HIV. As a result, the total number of confirmed infections linked to the hospital has reached 80.
Among the newly confirmed cases is a three-year-old girl from Karachi’s Metroville area. Her father said she was admitted to the hospital for treatment of a chest infection before later testing positive for HIV.
According to him, his daughter’s health continued to worsen after receiving treatment. Doctors then advised further medical examinations. The tests later confirmed that she had contracted HIV.
The new cases have added to growing public concern about the outbreak and the safety of medical procedures at the hospital.
Investigation Into the Outbreak Continues
The latest cases come only days after Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani confirmed that 78 children had been infected at the hospital.
The minister described the situation as a “serious issue” and assured the public that a comprehensive investigation would continue. He also pledged strict action against everyone found responsible for the incident.
Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the infections to determine how the outbreak occurred.
High Court Seeks Government’s Explanation
Earlier this month, the Sindh High Court directed the provincial government to explain the HIV outbreak within two weeks.
The order came during proceedings on a petition claiming that around 200 children had been affected because of alleged negligence at the hospital.
The petitioner argued that the alleged reuse of contaminated syringes during 2025 caused the spread of HIV among children receiving treatment. The matter remains under judicial review while investigations continue.
Rs2 Billion Endowment Fund Approved
Meanwhile, the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution has approved a Rs2 billion endowment fund for children affected by the outbreak.
The fund aims to provide long-term medical treatment and welfare support to infected children and their families.
Officials said the financial assistance will help ensure continued healthcare and support as authorities work to address the consequences of the outbreak.
Families Continue to Seek Answers
As the number of confirmed cases reaches 80, affected families continue to demand transparency and accountability.
Parents remain deeply concerned after children who visited the hospital for routine treatment later tested positive for HIV.
Meanwhile, investigations remain underway to establish responsibility and determine the exact cause of the outbreak. The government has also reiterated its commitment to supporting affected families while legal and administrative proceedings continue.
