Himalayan glaciers are losing ice at an accelerating rate, raising fresh concerns about water security for millions across the region.
A study released this month warns that the Himalayas could approach a critical tipping point as glacier loss continues.
The region is also moving toward “peak water” by mid-century, marking a shift in river flows across the region.
At that stage, river flows could stop increasing before eventually beginning to decline, creating growing pressure on water supplies.
Glacier Collapse Raises Fresh Concerns
The warning follows the collapse of a Himalayan glacier along the Nepal-Tibet border in late August.
The collapse triggered landslides and flash floods across nearby valleys, causing widespread destruction in affected areas.
At least 1,300 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 5,300 remain missing across Nepal and China’s Tibet region.
Meanwhile, retreating glaciers are leaving behind unstable glacial lakes that could pose serious risks to downstream communities.
Many of these lakes remain contained by loose rock and ice, increasing concerns about sudden flooding.
These lakes sit above valleys where millions of people live, leaving downstream populations exposed to potential disasters.
Thousands of Glaciers Remain Poorly Monitored
The study was produced by Systemiq in collaboration with the Integrated Mountain Initiative and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.
India’s GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment also contributed to the research.
According to the study, glacier mass loss across the Himalayas has accelerated considerably in recent decades.
However, only 21 glaciers currently receive ground monitoring across the region, despite an estimated 40,000 glaciers.
The Hindu Kush-Himalaya region stretches across eight countries, extending from Afghanistan to Myanmar.
Consequently, limited monitoring could make it harder to assess changing glacier conditions across such a vast mountain system.
High-Risk Glacial Lakes Threaten Downstream Areas
India alone has nearly 200 glacial lakes identified as high risk, according to the study.
Of these, 56 have been classified as “very high risk,” leaving millions of downstream residents potentially exposed.
As glaciers retreat, the number and condition of unstable glacial lakes could create additional challenges for communities below them.
Moreover, the approach toward peak water could affect regional water security as river flows eventually begin declining.
The changes could therefore affect communities that depend on Himalayan water resources for their daily needs.
Himalayas Face Growing Economic Pressure
The Himalayan region also plays a major economic role in India, supporting more than 20 percent of the country’s GDP.
Hundreds of millions of people depend on the region, making changes in its glaciers increasingly significant.
Although the Himalayan region covers around 18 percent of India’s land area, it accounts for roughly 35 percent of the country’s natural disasters.
As glacier loss accelerates, the study highlights growing concerns about water availability and disaster risks across the Himalayan region.
