The United States will continue targeting Iran’s military infrastructure if Tehran threatens international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said on Sunday.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Waltz said Iran should not expect the United States to ignore attacks on commercial shipping or American military bases.
He said President Donald Trump had demonstrated a willingness to respond decisively to such actions. Consequently, he warned that further military operations would remain an option if necessary.
Waltz stated that the United States would continue dismantling military infrastructure that Iran allegedly uses to threaten navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He described the waterway as an international shipping route that must remain open.
At the same time, Waltz said technical discussions between Washington and Tehran are continuing. He added that Trump remains committed to giving diplomacy an opportunity to succeed.
However, the ambassador warned that the president’s patience would not last indefinitely. He also said all options remain available to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
On Saturday, the US Central Command announced it had carried out strikes against multiple targets in Iran. The military said the operation followed Tehran’s latest attack on a commercial vessel near the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched missile and drone attacks targeting eight US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain. Iranian authorities described the strikes as retaliation for the US operation.
Despite the recent escalation, diplomatic efforts remain underway. The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 aimed at achieving a lasting peace agreement.
The two sides also began technical talks on June 21 to implement the memorandum and work toward ending the conflict. However, tensions remain high as military exchanges continue alongside ongoing diplomatic negotiations.
