A 20-year-old man from Texas faces federal charges after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI chief Sam Altmanโs luxury home in San Francisco and then stormed the companyโs headquarters. Prosecutors say Daniel Moreno-Gama travelled across the country with one clear goal: to kill the boss of the artificial intelligence giant behind ChatGPT.
The dramatic attack unfolded on Friday evening. Moreno-Gama lobbed the firebomb at the gates of Altmanโs residence before fleeing on foot to the nearby OpenAI offices. Once there, he grabbed a chair and tried to smash through the glass doors while shouting that he had come to burn the place down and kill everyone inside.
Anti-AI Manifesto Found on Suspect
When police arrived, they discovered Moreno-Gama carrying a jug of kerosene, a lighter and a three-part document titled โYour Last Warning.โ The manifesto railed against artificial intelligence and listed names and addresses of several AI company CEOs and their investors. It openly called for violence and even included an admission that the writer wanted to kill Altman. The document ended with a chilling line: โIf by some miracle you live, then I would take this as a sign from the divine to redeem yourself.โ
No one was hurt in either incident, yet the case has shaken Silicon Valley. Altman later posted a rare personal message on his blog alongside a photo of his husband and baby, urging calm and asking people to stop the violence.
Prosecutors charge Moreno-Gama with damaging property using explosives and possessing an unregistered firearm. They stress that violence has no place in debates over technology or politics. The case adds to growing worries about backlash against the fast-moving AI industry and its leaders.
