Technical-level negotiations between the United States and Iran will resume next week. The talks mark another step toward a broader agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions. Moreover, both sides aim to resolve key technical issues before finalising a comprehensive deal.
Experts Resume Technical Negotiations
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the talks during a visit to Kuwait on Wednesday. He said the technical group will likely meet in Switzerland on June 29 or 30.
“The technical group will reconvene again on, I believe it’s the 30th,” Rubio said. The discussions will continue at the staff level with technical experts from multiple US agencies.
Rubio said officials from the State Department and Department of Energy will participate. Additionally, other government agencies will assist with technical aspects of the proposed agreement.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry also confirmed the talks would resume after a temporary pause. Therefore, negotiations remain on schedule under the agreed diplomatic framework.
Washington Stresses Iranian Compliance
The negotiations form part of a 60-day process established under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the agreement earlier this month.
The talks aim to produce a final accord covering Iran’s nuclear activities and international sanctions. Meanwhile, negotiators will continue addressing outstanding technical and legal issues.
Rubio stressed that Iran must honour its commitments throughout the negotiation period. He warned Washington could reconsider sanctions relief if Tehran failed to comply.
“If they don’t live up to those commitments, the president has options at his disposal,” Rubio said. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed that the United States remains committed to diplomacy if Iran fulfils its obligations. He also said Washington would continue protecting the security interests of its regional allies.
