Women activists of Jamaat-e-Islami held a protest rally at Aabpara Chowk in Islamabad on Saturday. The protesters opposed the petroleum levy, rising fuel prices and increasing inflation.
Addressing the rally, JI Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman criticised the government over rising inflation and petroleum prices. He said increasing fuel costs had made essential goods more expensive for ordinary citizens.
He said middle-class and white-collar families were also struggling to manage household expenses. Naeem added that many poor families now find it difficult to afford even two meals daily.
JI Demands Abolition of Petroleum Levy
Hafiz Naeem demanded the immediate abolition of the petroleum levy imposed on consumers. He claimed the levy had no direct connection with changes in international oil prices.
He alleged that petrol prices increased whenever global oil prices rose. However, he said authorities failed to reduce prices proportionately when international rates declined.
The JI leader accused the government of collecting an “extortion-like tax” from citizens on every litre of petrol. He also criticised taxes on electricity, food items and mobile cards.
Rising Costs Put Pressure on Women
Naeem said women faced particular difficulties as they managed household budgets amid rising costs. He pointed to children’s education, electricity bills and daily expenses as major financial pressures.
He also criticised what he described as excessive spending by the ruling elite. He said authorities had failed to reduce their expenses despite the increasing cost of living.
The JI chief demanded the public disclosure of rulers’ expenses on foreign tours and personal events. He argued that the government should reduce elite privileges instead of increasing the financial burden on ordinary citizens.
The protesters called for relief from rising fuel prices and inflation. They also urged the government to remove the petroleum levy and reduce the burden on households.
