Washington: US President Donald Trump said Britainโs King Charles III supports his position that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, introducing the issue during a state dinner at the White House on Tuesday.
The event marked the second day of the monarchโs four-day visit to the United States. While addressing guests, Trump linked ongoing Middle East developments to his broader security agenda. He stated that recent military actions had weakened Iran and emphasised that Washington would prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear capabilities.
Moreover, Trump claimed that King Charles shared his view, saying the monarch agreed even more strongly on the issue. However, when King Charles delivered his remarks later in the evening, he did not mention Iran or the conflict.
Earlier, during a speech to the US Congress, the British monarch also avoided discussing the Iran situation. Instead, he focused on global cooperation and urged continued American support for Ukraine in its war with Russia. He also warned against the risks of growing isolationism.
Both the United States and Britain have long opposed Iranโs pursuit of nuclear weapons. In contrast, Tehran maintains that its nuclear programme serves peaceful purposes. As a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran insists it has the right to develop nuclear technology, including uranium enrichment.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high following the conflict that began on February 28. Although a ceasefire was reached on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.
