US Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta faced protests after arriving in Venice aboard his luxury yacht on Friday. The visit formed part of his Coastal Diplomacy 250 tour marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Demonstrators criticized the display of wealth, arguing it symbolized growing American influence during political tensions. Hundreds gathered near St. Mark’s Basin as police maintained a heavy security presence.
Protesters Criticize Luxury Yacht Visit
Protesters carried inflatable pool toys and banners while marching toward Fertitta’s superyacht, Boardwalk. One sign read “Make America Read Again,” while another referenced a traditional Venetian sardine dish.
Meanwhile, police officers patrolled the area on foot and by boat to prevent disruptions. Organizers said the demonstration opposed both overtourism and the Trump administration’s foreign policies.
Activist Stella Morion argued Venice should not become a showcase for wealthy foreign elites. She also criticized recent US military actions, claiming they contributed to rising energy prices.
Coastal Diplomacy Tour Continues Across Italy
Fertitta said the Coastal Diplomacy 250 tour celebrates the historic partnership between the United States and Italy. The ambassador has already visited Sicily, Calabria, and Puglia before arriving in Venice.
The billionaire businessman became US ambassador to Italy in 2025 after building his fortune in hospitality. He also owns the NBA’s Houston Rockets and leads Fertitta Entertainment.
Although officials have not disclosed his Venice schedule, Fertitta is expected to attend the Redentore Festival on Saturday. Meanwhile, his visit comes as relations between President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have reportedly cooled.
The demonstrations echoed protests held during Jeff Bezos’ high-profile Venice wedding last year, highlighting continued local opposition to luxury tourism and elite events.
