Yemen’s Houthi group reported 40 Saudi airstrikes today in retaliation to a series of Houthi attacks.
Houthi news agency Saba said Saudi forces carried out the strikes in Yemen’s Taiz, Hodeida, Al-Jawf and Marib provinces.
According to the agency, the attacks occurred within several hours as fighting between the Houthis and Yemeni government forces intensified.
Fresh fighting spreads across Yemen
The Houthis control large parts of northwestern Yemen and launched a major offensive against government forces last week.
Saudi Arabia supports the Yemeni government forces in the conflict. Meanwhile, the Houthis have launched attacks against Saudi territory that reportedly wounded dozens of people.
On Wednesday, the Saudi-led coalition said the Houthis fired ballistic missiles and drones toward several cities in southern Saudi Arabia.
Saudi civil defence authorities also issued warnings about potential danger in Khamis Mushait and Abha amid the attacks.
Conflict threatens key shipping route
The Houthis are seeking to advance toward Red Sea coastal areas bordering the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The waterway connects Asia and Europe through the Red Sea and Suez Canal. Therefore, renewed fighting could create additional risks for international shipping.
The strategic route has gained importance amid the wider Middle East conflict, which followed Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Since last week, fighting in Yemen has killed more than 500 people, mostly combatants. The country returned to war in July after years of relative calm. The conflict has become linked to wider regional tensions following the US-Israeli offensive against Iran.
