KARACHI: The Sindh government announced public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram on Monday in observance of Ashura. The holidays will fall on June 25 and 26 as Muslims across Pakistan and the world observe the occasion with grief and reverence.
The month of Muharram-ul-Haram marks the beginning of the Islamic year 1448 AH. According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Muharram began on June 14 this year.
Security arrangements across Karachi
Meanwhile, Karachi police have finalized comprehensive security arrangements for Muharram processions and gatherings. Authorities aim to ensure smooth observance of religious events with strict monitoring.
Furthermore, officials announced that participants joining the main processions from the 8th to 10th Muharram through designated vehicles must obtain permit stickers or passes. Applications are being processed at the DIG Traffic Karachi Office in Garden Headquarters.
In addition, applicants must submit vehicle registration documents, CNIC copies, driver photographs, and authorization letters from relevant organizations. Officials will only issue passes to law enforcement agencies, registered groups, ambulances, media outlets, and approved entities.
Restrictions and enforcement measures
Moreover, authorities clarified that unregistered individuals and vehicles will not receive permits. A maximum of three passengers per permit will be allowed.
They also warned that any violation, false information, or misuse of permits will result in immediate cancellation. Security forces will conduct strict checks to ensure compliance throughout the observance period.
Overall, the government and law enforcement agencies are coordinating closely to maintain peace and security during Muharram processions across Sindh.
