Operations Directorate Officer Steps Down Before Suspension Decision
A senior Israeli military commander resigned from the armed forces on Tuesday after military police questioned him over allegations related to professional conduct.
Brigadier-General Yisrael Shomer, head of the Israel Defense Forces’ Operations Division, submitted his resignation hours after investigators questioned him regarding claims that he had engaged in a consensual relationship with an officer who served under his command.
According to reports, military authorities conducted several hours of questioning before senior leadership considered disciplinary measures. Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Eyal Zamir reportedly intended to suspend Shomer following the investigation. However, before any suspension could take effect, the brigadier-general submitted his resignation through the chain of command.
Military officials subsequently accepted the resignation, bringing Shomerโs service to an immediate end.
The departure marks a significant development within the IDFโs senior leadership structure. As head of the Operations Division, Shomer held one of the militaryโs most influential operational roles and oversaw planning across multiple combat theaters. The position is traditionally viewed as a key stepping stone toward promotion to higher command ranks.
Long Military Career Ends Amid Broader Leadership Challenges
Shomer began his military career in the Nahal Brigade and progressed through a series of command positions over several decades. During his service, he commanded combat units, led regional brigades and held senior operational appointments within the Israeli military.
He later served as commander of the Nahal Brigade before receiving promotion to brigadier-general and assuming command responsibilities within the militaryโs operational framework.
Additionally, Shomer gained public attention during the October 7 attacks when he reportedly joined local defense efforts near his residence as militants infiltrated surrounding communities.
His resignation comes at a time when broader personnel issues are emerging within the Israeli military. Reports indicate that a number of senior officers are considering early retirement amid uncertainty surrounding military pension arrangements and proposed changes to retirement benefits.
Several high-ranking officers have reportedly expressed concern about the potential financial impact of future reforms, prompting discussions about accelerating retirement plans rather than waiting for scheduled promotions or new assignments.
Meanwhile, military leadership continues to manage operational challenges across multiple fronts while addressing personnel matters within its senior command structure.
Shomerโs departure represents one of the most notable leadership changes in recent months and leaves a key position within the Operations Directorate vacant as the military reviews its next appointments.
