Human rights commissioner points to possible exchange while local officials report attack in Russian-held territory
Russia and Ukraine may be preparing for another prisoner exchange, according to Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova, as fresh tensions also emerged after authorities in a Russian-controlled part of Ukraineโs Zaporizhzhia region reported damage to a school building in an alleged Ukrainian attack.
Speaking as cited by Russian state news agency TASS on Tuesday, Lantratova said another exchange of prisoners between Moscow and Kyiv could take place soon. However, she did not provide a timeline or details about the number of detainees who might be involved in a possible swap.
The comments come as prisoner exchanges remain one of the few areas in which Russia and Ukraine have continued limited cooperation despite the ongoing war.
Possible prisoner swap raises hopes for fresh humanitarian step
Lantratovaโs remarks have fuelled expectations that the two sides could move forward with another humanitarian arrangement in the near future. Previous prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine have often involved lengthy negotiations and mediation efforts, with both sides treating such deals as politically and emotionally significant.
Although no formal announcement has yet been made by either Moscow or Kyiv, any new exchange would likely be closely watched as a rare point of contact between the two countries amid continued hostilities on the battlefield.
School building reportedly damaged in Zaporizhzhia strike
Meanwhile, local authorities in the Russian-controlled section of Ukraineโs Zaporizhzhia region said a Ukrainian attack had damaged a school building. Officials did not immediately release further details about the extent of the damage, whether classes were taking place at the time, or if any casualties had been reported.
The incident adds to the broader pattern of attacks and counterattacks across front-line regions, where civilian infrastructure has repeatedly been caught up in the conflict. As the situation develops, both the reported school strike and the prospect of a new prisoner exchange are likely to draw further attention from officials and observers on both sides.
This remains a developing story, and additional details are expected as more information becomes available.
