Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a lengthy phone call on Wednesday, focusing on conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the conversation lasted more than 90 minutes and remained โfrank and businesslike.โ Moreover, Moscow initiated the call as both leaders reviewed key geopolitical developments.
Leaders address Iran and regional stability
During the discussion, both presidents paid close attention to rising tensions involving Iran and the Persian Gulf. Ushakov said Putin supported Trumpโs decision to extend a ceasefire linked to Iran, arguing it could create space for negotiations and help stabilize the situation. However, Putin also warned about the severe consequences of renewed military action by the United States and Israel, stressing that escalation would harm not only the region but the broader international community.
Meanwhile, Russia reiterated its willingness to support diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the crisis. In Washington, Trump described the exchange as productive but noted that much of the discussion centered on Ukraine rather than Iran.
Ukraine war remains central issue
The leaders also discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine, which began with Russiaโs full-scale invasion in 2022. Ushakov said Putin briefed Trump on battlefield developments, claiming Russian forces currently hold the strategic initiative. Additionally, both leaders expressed similar concerns about Ukraineโs leadership and the prolongation of the conflict.
Putin also proposed a temporary ceasefire during Victory Day commemorations on May 9, a move Trump reportedly supported. Nevertheless, the conflict continues to cause widespread destruction and displacement, underscoring the urgency of diplomatic solutions.
