A major initiative to address the issue of abuse on social media has been taken by the Punjab Chief Minister, Ms. Maryam Nawaz, who has authorized new guidelines to deal with cyberbullying that specifically targets women and children. This move will help the authorities in dealing with cybercrime cases effectively.
New system to tackle rising cybercrime cases
As the use of digital mediums increases, instances of online bullying, extortion, and mistreatment are also rising. To tackle this situation, the Punjab government has sanctioned a separate wing that works similar to a dedicated crime unit to investigate and resolve cyber crimes. This step is anticipated to boost investigation efforts and enhance collaboration between various law enforcement departments.
In addition, the Punjab Police will now hold direct jurisdiction over any case related to cybercrimes. Previously, such issues were resolved by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Due to limited resources, the resolution period was lengthy.
Faster response to protect women and children
Notably, the authorities claim that the revised policy would ensure that the victims can visit the local police station offices directly, without having to undergo complicated processes. Consequently, complaints related to harassment, intimidation, or blackmail would be recorded immediately.
Furthermore, the police administration is confident that this would make it much easier to protect women and children. Through swift action and strict adherence to the new policies, the government plans to provide a safer internet space for citizens.
In summary, the plan demonstrates the province’s commitment to updating its law enforcement system and addressing new challenges.
