Section 144 Enforced Across Province
The Punjab government has banned pillion riding across the province for two days as part of security measures for Muharram. The ban will remain in force on June 25 and 26, which fall on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
The Punjab Home Department issued a notification under Section 144 to maintain public peace and ensure the safety of lives and property. Officials said the decision was taken due to possible threats to law and order during Muharram processions and gatherings.
Weapons and Provocative Content Also Banned
According to the notification, authorities have warned that miscreants, violent extremists, and anti-social elements may try to disturb religious harmony. Officials said such elements could attempt to provoke public sentiments during Muharram.
The government has also banned the carrying of weapons in public places. Raising provocative slogans and displaying signs or material that may incite public emotions have also been prohibited. The spread of sectarian hatred through social and digital media has also been banned.
Exemptions Announced for Women and Journalists
The Home Department has also banned the construction of fortified positions on rooftops along procession routes. Sitting or standing on rooftops of houses and shops located near procession routes will also not be allowed during processions.
However, the pillion riding ban will not apply to women, children, senior citizens, journalists, and uniformed law enforcement personnel. Police stations have been authorized to register cases against violators under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
