Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif clarified that Iran’s ballistic missile programme is not part of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding. He made the remarks during delegation-level talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Islamabad.
The premier said the issue never appeared during negotiations between Iran and the United States. Therefore, the signed agreement contains no reference to ballistic missiles.
Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Peace
Prime Minister Shehbaz rejected what he described as attempts to misrepresent the agreement. He urged observers to avoid confusion regarding the MoU’s actual contents.
Furthermore, he argued that countries should avoid applying double standards on ballistic missile capabilities. He said Iran deserves the same rights as other nations regarding its defence policies.
The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to mediating between Tehran and Washington. He said Islamabad would continue supporting efforts for a lasting and honourable peace.
Additionally, he praised Iran’s leadership and people for their resilience during recent challenges. He also commended Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for supporting the ceasefire process.
Iran Appreciates Pakistan’s Mediation Efforts
Prime Minister Shehbaz thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tรผrkiye, and Egypt for supporting regional peace efforts. He warned that a wider conflict could produce devastating consequences across the region.
Following the talks, both leaders addressed a joint press conference in Islamabad. The premier described the discussions as productive and focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation.
President Masoud Pezeshkian also confirmed that Iran’s missile programme was never included in the agreement. He stated that Iran would never negotiate its defence capabilities with any country.
The Iranian president described Pakistan as a brotherly nation with deep historical and cultural ties. He added that the Islamabad MoU reflected Iran’s confidence in Pakistan’s mediation efforts. Both leaders pledged to strengthen bilateral relations and promote lasting regional stability.
